A. "Bud" Schonder,
M.D.
Board Certified Ophthalmologist
Dr. Schonder is a native of Illinois. He graduated from Washington University in St. Louis for both
undergraduate and medical school. He interned at Parkland Hospital in Dallas and completed his
ophthalmology training at Washington University/Barnes Hospital in St. Louis. Washington University/Barnes
Medical Center are consistently rated in the top 10 medical and eye training centers in the country. Upon
completion of his training, Dr. Schonder spent two years as a Navy ophthalmologist, and then became a
clinical instructor in Ophthalmology at USC Medical Center in Los Angeles, teaching students their surgical
skills.
Dr. Schonder moved to Reno in 1973, where he remains a Clinical Professor of Surgery at University of
Nevada and has published several articles in ophthalmic journals. Dr. Schonder is a pioneer in refractive
surgery and is one of the founding members of The American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons.
Since 1985, Dr. Schonder has performed thousands of refractive and laser surgeries including RK, PRK and
LASIK. This extensive experience gives Dr. Schonder insight into the visual needs and expectations of his
patients.
Dr. Schonder is a Board Certified Ophthalmologist, a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, a
member of Washoe County and Nevada medical societies, and staff member of all hospitals and surgical
centers in Washoe County.
Dr. Schonder and his wife have two grown children. They have been active in numerous northern Nevada
foundations and benefits. They enjoy biking, skiing and fishing in their spare time, and are new golfers.
