Our Procedures : Cataract Surgery
Cataract surgery is an outpatient procedure. While you will need to be at the surgery center for several hours most of that is pre-operative preparations. The surgery which Dr. Mills performs is very advanced and successful and can typically be completed within 15 to 30 minutes with little or no discomfort to the patient. When you arrive, you will receive eye drops and an IV anesthetic to minimize any anxiety or discomfort during the operation. During the procedure, a small incision is made into the eye. Your surgeon will use a very small ultrasonic instrument (about the size of a pen tip) known as a phacoemulsification hand piece to break up and remove your clouded lens. In some cases this can be done with an AquaLase®* device, which uses gentle pulses of fluid to wash away your cloudy lens. Once this is accomplished, your surgeon will insert an individually selected intraocular lens (IOL) implant into your eye. After Cataract Surgery After the procedure, you'll be given a short time to rest and recover. Then, the very same day, you can go home. Within the next 24 hours, your doctor will need to see you for an evaluation. Drops will be prescribed to guard against infection and to help your eyes heal. For a few days, you may need to wear a clear shield, especially at night, to prevent you from rubbing your eye.
